I remember years ago sitting in church, wondering why there were so few men engaging in the faith. Where were all the men?
Keep in mind, I was also just showing up — doing my obligation but too fearful to step up.
Eventually, my faith waned. The challenges of a young family, the financial pressures, and the constant hum of life had taken hold. I had become that man — my faith walk had fallen into desolation, and Mass was not a priority.
This wasn’t the upbringing I had known. Being born in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, the Catholic Church was strong. It was important to go to Mass. You had to walk through a sea of men standing in the back of church, with their wives and children sitting up front.
It was a community that came together each week to receive the gift God had for us.
Looking back, I can see why I asked, Where are the men?
It was important to my father that we attended church, that we lived out our faith, and that we were Catholic. Those times in Ireland were troublesome for Catholics, but from a child’s vantage point it all seemed normal.
I didn’t realize it then, but I see now that it was the beginning of a purpose for me and my family.
Today, I encourage men to step up, to engage with their Catholic Church. Lead or be part of a men’s community within your parish.
Think you’re not ready? God will provide.
If you’re thinking, not me? God is asking, will you respond?
You might be afraid — God will remove the fear.
Until then, do it afraid.
I recall sharing my fears and sense of inadequacy with a Deacon friend during a trip. He said, “We will bring this to Jesus, and He will remove all fear and doubt.”
It didn’t happen overnight, but I began to find God in the circumstances of my life. When I was asked or encouraged to act, I did it — even if I was afraid. I learned to “do it afraid.”
It’s like lifting weights: at first, the weight feels heavy, stretching us beyond comfort. Over time, what was once hard becomes easier, allowing for more growth.
Look at the circumstances of your own life. God said, “Fear not, for I am with you.”
God said, “I am with you always.” He continues to speak through Scripture and through our everyday circumstances.
Where is God speaking, and are we listening? What is He saying to you today, in your life?
Whatever reason we give for not responding to His call, He waits patiently for us men to step up and be the faithful witnesses He speaks about in His Word.
