You are called, you matter, you belong
How a multicultural barbecue, a bold challenge from Deacon Harold, and the courage of everyday men ignited renewal at St. Peter’s parish.
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good, acceptable, and perfect. — Romans 12:2
The Diocese of Calgary embarked on a diocesan renewal in November 2023, embracing the theme “You are called. You matter. You belong.” This vision resonates deeply with the work I am doing with Heroic Men and with our parish community.
From Vision to Parish Action
In early 2024 I was invited to join the parish renewal team, tasked with translating the diocesan call into concrete parish initiatives. Around the same time I interviewed Deacon Harold Burke‑Sivers about his new book, Building a Civilization of Love: A Catholic Response to Racism. My reflections on the universality of the Church—how every communion line mirrors the rich diversity of God’s people—prompted me to consider how our own parish could better reflect its members.
Deacon Harold challenged us to make the parish’s liturgical and communal life a true “mirror of the faithful.” The Knights of Columbus hosted a men’s pizza night, providing a casual setting for listening and dialogue. Seizing the moment, I raised Deacon Harold’s challenge and suggested that, instead of the traditional salmon dinner, we could host an African‑inspired barbecue—especially meaningful given the growing number of Nigerian families in our parish.
David Asekomhe, present at that gathering, embraced the idea and pledged to explore it further.
A New Pastor, A New Momentum
When a new pastor, Fr. Fabio de Souza was assigned to lead our parish, the renewal momentum intensified. David, still eager to act on the African‑style gathering, assembled a planning team that included Emmanuel Edem and Emmanuel Udoh. Together they conceived “A Taste of St Peter’s,” a multicultural feast inviting every parishioner to bring a dish from their cultural heritage.
Seeing other men step into leadership roles was both inspiring and encouraging; their enthusiasm sparked an excitement throughout the community.
“A Taste of St Peter’s” – A Celebration of the Universal Church
The event took place on October 4, coinciding with the launch of the third year of the diocesan renewal. The celebration featured:
Thirty countries represented, each contributing multiple traditional dishes.
Nearly 200 attendees, a testament to the parish’s broad participation.
The evening was a vivid tableau of the Church’s universality—flavors, languages, and faces from around the world gathered around one table, embodying the very spirit of “You belong.”
Looking Forward
I pray that this renewal continues to deepen our sense of belonging and to reflect the universal nature of the Church in a world often torn apart by division. It fills me with hope to witness men like David, Emmanuel, Emmanuel and their fellow volunteers stepping forward, inviting others to build up the Kingdom by living out the will of God.
May the momentum sparked by “A Taste of St Peter’s” carry us forward, strengthening our community, enriching our liturgical life, and bearing witness to the love that unites all of God’s children as a church of encounter!

A celebration of faith and music: The Litany of St. Joseph in Song
On a remarkable evening in Calgary, the Catholic community gathered for a joyous and family-friendly musical event, one that resonated with men, women, and children alike. This spiritually uplifting concert was a tribute to the power of faith expressed through music, offering a rich blend of tradition, talent, and devotion.
