How Men Bring Christ Into the Dark Places of the Holidays
Finding God Not in Perfect Scenes, but in the Real Struggles of Family Life
When most of us picture Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, we imagine peace — soft light, steady calm, everything in order. But idealized images can work against us. When your own family feels divided or distant… when the holidays amplify old wounds… when you feel like the only one fighting for connection… a perfect picture can make God seem far away from your real life.
But the Scriptures tell a different story. Jesus didn’t enter a serene household. He entered a family in danger — a young couple fleeing violence in the middle of the night. (Matt 2). The first “home” Jesus knew was uncertainty and darkness.
That’s exactly where God meets us too, in the anxious, tense, and difficult moments of our own family lives.
And in that darkness, Joseph becomes our model. He leads in three movements: faith, receptive prayer, obedient action.
First, faith. Joseph gets multiple messages from angels in Scripture, which means he’s asleep! Not from apathy, but because his life is anchored in God. Most of us know what it’s like to lose sleep over stress. Joseph shows us what it looks like to rest while the future is uncertain. Faith steadies a man’s inner world so he can face the outer one with clarity. God knows you, down to the hairs on your head. He cares about the things you care about. He’s not on the sidelines, he’s at work for your good.
Then comes prayer, the kind that isn’t frantic or performative. Joseph isn’t trying
to “feel” anything or force anything. He’s simply still enough to receive God’s direction. As Mother Teresa said, “In the silence of the heart, God speaks.” Men often try to muscle through prayer. Joseph reminds us that God doesn’t reward effort — He responds to receptivity.
Finally, obedient action. Joseph wakes and moves. Not with panic, not with self-
reliance, but with courage grounded in God’s word. He doesn’t wait to understand every detail. He obeys. Don’t jump at the chance to “just do something,” Scripture reminds us: what matters is doing what God asks. This is what makes Christ’s presence felt.
Every family has darkness — tension, distance, grief, misunderstanding. But Christ enters precisely there.
So ask yourself: Where is the darkness in my own family? What part of the next 3 weeks makes my gut tighten? That’s precisely where God wants to meet you.
Faith. Silence. Obedience. This is how men bring Christ into the world. And God will guide you, just as surely as He guided Joseph.
